New North London Synagogue

New North London Synagogue are a Masorti community based in North West London with a membership of over 3,000 including more than 1,000 children and young people.

The rabbis wrote in Bamidbar Rabbah that there are ‘seventy faces of the Torah’ They understood that multiple expressions of the Torah’s truth exist simultaneously, a pluralism of valid ways. This is not a comfortable idea and yet it is one the synagogue embodies. We chose to use the iconic image of a Sefer Torah as it is both central to synagogue life and the origin of Jewish values.

We looked at optical illusions and cubism as ways to visually articulate this idea and build on the previous logo’s wide palette of colours to express the diversity of the community. It is not meant to be conventionally comfortable but rather alive and stimulating, and just like NNLS will mean different things to different people.
